Paul Leonard Newman aka Paul Newman| January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008

A man can only be judged by his actions, and not by his good intentions or his beliefs.

Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, 1961.
Joan, a 19 year old Freedom Rider, was sentenced to two months in prison for her involvement in the integration of a Jackson, Mississippi bound train.  She served more than the required two months because each addition day reduced her $200 fine by $3.
In the Fall of 1961, Joan transferred from Duke University to historically black Tougaloo Southern Christian College because she felt integration should be a two way street.
Today Joan is a retired teaching assistant living in Virginia and mother to five sons.  After the 2008 election she brought her Obama pin to the grave of Medgar Evers.

“There was something transgressive about having the woman being the one who is attacked first, that there’s a sort of, in movie terms, a popular conception that women are weaker than men and that the only way that they can triumph in a hand-to-hand situation is if they somehow have an advantage from the beginning,” Soderbergh said. “They trick the guy and they get the upper hand because they’re being somewhat nefarious. Very consciously, in two circumstances, she’s attacked in an unprovoked manner and has to work her way back into winning the fight. With someone like Gina, you can pull that off and have it be believable. She can really break you in half.” (via)

“It’s really sort of a sore spot because we live in what I call an age of conformity, where you have to travel with the herd. If you don’t travel with the herd and if you don’t say yes to that little man who’s leading the pack, you’re branded as a rebel. I am trying desperately - I hope - to be an individual. I think there’s quite a bit of difference. Actually, I can’t stand them, they drive me out of my mind. The rebels. I see them at parties and they sit in corners looking terrible sensitive and introverted, and yet my feeling is they’re just as mediocre as the people they despise who are the conformists. Their answers are always pre-determined, the rebel always has to say no to everything society asks of him just as the conformist always has to say yes.” - Paul Newman, on being labeled a rebel
